"why the hell are we conditioned into the smooth
strawberry-and-cream mother-goose-world,
alice-in-wonderland fable,
only to be broken on the wheel as we grow older
and become aware of ourselves as individuals
with a dull responsibility in life?"

"you realize, of course, that everything i say is horseshit"

i like nonsense

"i like nonsense, it wakes up the brain cells.  fantasy is a necessary ingredient in living."

"in my world, everyone's a pony and they all eat rainbows and poop butterflies!"

so many people are shut up tight inside themselves like boxes,
yet they would open up, unfolding quite wonderfully,
if only you were interested in them

blackbird fly

blackbird fly

the first thing you notice about New Orleans are the burying grounds - the cemeteries - and they're a cold proposition, one of the best things there are here.  going by, you try to be as quiet as possible, better to let them sleep... ghosts of women and men who have sinned and who've died and are now living in tombs. the past doesn't pass away so quickly here. you could be dead for a long time.

and i know i've got a lot to fear
you'll get me out
oh god just get me out of here
are you astounding us, surrounding us

nobody's daughter
she never was, she never will
be beholden
to anyone she cannot kill
you don't understand how damaged we really are
you don't understand how evil we really are

blind folk see the fairies
oh better far than we
who miss the shining of their wings
because our eyes are filled with things
we do not wish to see

99 dreams i have had
in every one a red balloon
it's all over and i'm standing pretty
in this dust that was a city
if i could find a souvenir
just to prove the world was here
and here is a red balloon
i think of you, and let it go

the river flows
it flows to the sea
wherever that river goes
that's where i want to be
flow river flow
let your waters wash down
take me from this road
to some other town

at last

"i can say that i've lived here in honor and danger
but i'm just an animal and cannot explain a life
down this chain of days i wished to stay among my people
relation now means nothing, having chosen so defined
and if death should smell my breathing
as it pass beneath my window
let it lead me trembling, trembling
i own every bell that tolls me"
